Every other Monday is meal planning day. This is also grocery shopping day. We try to limit our trips to the grocery store (because covid) and meal planning helps waste less food!
We start by writing out all the stuff we have left in our fridge and pantry. ex: we have half a carton of eggs, plenty of sour cream, a bag of polenta, one carton of red pepper tomato soup. ETC.
Then we decide what we want to eat for meals. We write out each day lunch and dinner, with brunch on the weekends, then start to fill it out. Most meals we can get a day of leftovers from, so we factor that in as well. We always support local businesses on Fridays and get take out, and we usually make our own pizzas or do a frozen pizza on Sunday nights. We’ve gotten into a really good schedule, knowing what days we are busier and have less time to cook, and days where we have plenty of time to create something new.
Once we have the 14 day meal plan, we make a shopping list. The four places we shop the most are:
ALDI: most produce, canned items, frozen stuff, cheese, sandwich stuff, spices, coffee
Trader Joe’s: Red pepper tomato soup, pepper jelly, two buck chuck, random other TJ goodies!
Costco: Bulk items like butter, olive oil, chai tea, granola bars, monster energy drinks, peanut butter
HyVee: basically anything we could not get at ALDI…there are a few things I will not get generic, coffee creamer being numero uno!
We make a list, head to all the places (most places aren’t letting you take in your own bags, so we take everything out to our car, then bag them in our own bags) then come home and sanitize everything and put it away. Nothing is better than a full fridge and pantry! Makes us so excited for the next two weeks of new meals!
Do you meal plan? Let me know what works for you!
